Yet Another Rough Sketch
I’ve done over 800 sketches in the past decade. I never know what I’m drawing when I start. I just doodle and continue to doodle until something emerges. Sometimes it’s simple and cartoonish. More often it’s surreal and a bit perverse. Almost always there is the suggestion of something strange or menacing going on. I may give up on a sketch, only to return to it days, weeks, months or even years later. I treat sketches as puzzles needing to be solved. Usually that takes several sessions and considerable time — and they’re never ever completely solved. Those that intrigue me most I develop into oil paintings.
